Morning News: Christie courting urban Passaic voters

The Senate will be holding budget hearings today, looking at Governor Christie’s proposals for the departments of Community Affairs and Environmental Protection.

Columnist Charlie Stile looks at Christie’s attempt to court urban Passaic County voters in this year’s gubernatorial election.

Former Gov. Thomas Kean is calling on Christie to find a dedicated funding source for the popular Green Acres open space preservation program now that funding has run dry.

Senate Democrats have unveiled a gun control package that would include an overhaul of the state’s background check system. At the same time, federal gun control legislation could weaken the state’s strict gun laws.

Moody’s Investors Service, one of the three main credit rating agencies, is looking at a possible downgrade to Rutgers University’s debt because of its handling of the firing of former men’s basketball coach Mike Rice.

We also look at the obstacles Rutgers faces in its impending merger with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

And Christie is reviving his push for an income tax cut that floundered in the Democratically controller Legislature after the governor’s budget projections fell short, the Associated Press is reporting.
